Abstract + Intro

I'm playing around with a few options for the Introduction. I can't decide if I like the first layout or the second better. Any advice?

  1. I think it partly depends on the precedent you want to set for the rest of the page layouts (eg. whether you generally plan on putting text over images or not) but my preference is certainly the first option, with the text on the opposite page. I think the picture, as a composition, is much more striking without text running over it. That said, I might put the text on the right side and the image on the left (somehow it seems more natural), but again, I think that may be a matter of personal taste and desired format for the remaining pages.

  2. i agree with jen, i generally don't like text over images, especially if they are key to your work. i do like the image on the right side (it is much nicer on its own and without being cropped to fit the page)... i'd maybe play around with the text box proportions and placement on the left side. (maybe echoing the portrait photo? maybe a more compact and centred box? maybe a bit closer to spine?)

  3. I am with both girls - no writing over photograph. I think both lose something when that happens. I like the proportions of the photograph when it is not cropped as well. And I also think the photo should be on the left... there is something that bugs me about reading something so important on left hand side - to me it makes it less important. But maybe you want to emphasize the importance of the photo instead? Your call.
